Gledé Browne Kabongo on Parenting & Family @GKabongo #Suspense #MustRead #BookClub

Tell us a bit about your family.
My husband and I have two boys ages ten and six. Our six-year old is obsessed with bowling, and building stuff. It doesn’t matter if his building materials are Legos or cardboard boxes. I say he’s my Real Estate mogul in the making. The ten-year old figures out how to beat video games by doing Google and You Tube searches, and for some reason, is fascinated by the forensic science presented on the show Mystery Detectives.
How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
I think even the most successful authors experience those emotions from time to time. You always worry about how your books will be received. My husband is a great source of support for me when I get down on myself. And I’m pretty hard on myself. He has this way of making me see things through a new lens I hadn’t thought of before.
What are you most proud of in your personal life?
My children. It was a difficult journey for my husband and I to become parents but when we did, we were blessed with these wonderful, funny, intelligent, amazing kids.
What books did you love growing up?
I loved the Famous Five and Secret Seven series by British author Enid Blyton. Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries were part of my staple as well. As a teenager, I got hooked on the Harlequin Romance novels. But as with most people, as I got older my reading choices got more sophisticated and eclectic. I enjoy most fiction, as well as non-fiction books.
What do you hope your obituary will day about you?
I really hope there’s something in there that says, “She did it her way.”
Location and life experiences can really influence writing. Tell us where you grew up and where you now live?
I grew up in the Caribbean and left for the U.S. when I turned 13. It’s where I developed my love for books. We had a Book Club going before it became all the rage. As a matter of fact, the library in my town overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. A reader can’t ask for more than that. When I moved to the U.S., I lived in Milton, MA until I went off to college.
What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?
Each presents its own challenges. I have an advantage over other authors in that I have a marketing background but that doesn’t mean it isn’t difficult. I have to sit down and really think about the marketing strategically and how I can achieve my goals but I do it in small steps.  Writing is intense, and scary and frustrating, and can be all consuming but I like the madness. Getting published used to be tough and it still is depending on your goals (i.e. breaking into traditional publishing).
Do you find it hard to share your work?
It’s absolutely terrifying. I still find it difficult but I force myself to do it and draw inspiration from the readers who feel that my work touched them in some way.
Do you plan to publish more books?
Absolutely. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a kid and really take it seriously. I’m working on my second novel and have several more in the pipeline. Every day I come up with new ideas for books so I’m looking forward to a long career.
What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time…
I’ve been a marketer in the B2B space for the past ten plus years so I’ll probably keep doing that until I achieve every writer’s dream: writing full-time, looking out at the water, sipping some drink with an umbrella in it. If only it were that easy. Most likely I’ll be hunkered down in a room with my computer for hours on end until I remember I have other obligations besides writing.
